Tennis legend Andre Agassi hails teenage American Learner Tien for his exceptional skill and mental toughness.
Retired tennis great Andre Agassi has praised teenage American Learner Tien, calling him "incredibly gifted" with the mental toughness needed to compete at the highest level.
The 19-year-old Tien impressed in Beijing, reaching the final of the China Open, and last week challenged former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev to three sets at the Shanghai Masters before bowing out in the round of 16.
Speaking in Hong Kong at the Prudential NextGen Aces event, Agassi emphasized Tien’s rapid development and tactical intelligence.
Agassi noted that despite Tien’s physical limitations compared to taller and stronger players, his execution and composure on court are exceptional.
Agassi drew comparisons with Australia’s world No. 7 Alex De Minaur, praising both players for their ability to remain calm under pressure and consistently challenge top-ranked opponents. Tien, who turned professional in 2023 and is currently ranked 38th, has earned Agassi’s confidence for his mental resilience.
Elsewhere in tennis, defending champion Shane Furrows and Canadian teenager Iman Bajramovic claimed titles at the American Express Tshwane Super 8 tournament in Pretoria. Furrows, the No. 4 seed, came from a set down to defeat top seed Heinrich Rootman 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the men’s final.
On the women’s side, 15-year-old Bajramovic overcame her older sister Hana in a three-set thriller, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4, after defeating South African top seed Ciaran McConnell 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals.
