Anastasia Potapova has announced that she has switched her nationality from Russian to Austrian after her application for citizenship was approved. The 24-year-old, who previously represented Russia in the Billie Jean King Cup in 2018 and 2019, will now be eligible to compete for Austria starting next year.
Russia’s ongoing ban from team competitions, due to the invasion of Ukraine, had prevented Potapova from participating in the tournament.
Potapova shared the news on Instagram, expressing her excitement about representing Austria. She described the country as welcoming and said she feels at home in Vienna, which she plans to make her second home. “As part of this, I am proud to announce that starting from 2026 I will be representing my new homeland Austria in my professional tennis career,” she wrote.
Once the nationality switch is official, Potapova, currently ranked world number 51, will become Austria’s top-ranked player, surpassing Julia Grabher, who is ranked 94.
Potapova has been sidelined since the China Open in October due to injury, and her decision follows a trend of Russian players changing allegiances to compete internationally.
Earlier this year, Daria Kasatkina received permanent residency in Australia, while doubles player Natela Dzalamidze switched to Georgia to participate at Wimbledon following the Russian ban in 2022.
