Alexandre Muller secured his first ATP Tour title with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kei Nishikori in the Hong Kong Open final on Sunday. The match lasted 1 hour and 43 minutes, as Muller fought back after losing the opening set to defeat Nishikori, who was aiming for his first ATP title in six years.
Muller, who had dropped the first set in every match of the tournament, became just the third player in ATP history to win a title despite losing the opening set in each of his matches. The 27-year-old Frenchman expressed his gratitude for the support and reflected on his remarkable week, which saw him climb 11 places in the world rankings to a career-high 56th.
Nishikori, who had made a strong start by winning the first set in just 33 minutes, struggled to maintain his momentum and ultimately succumbed to Muller’s strong recovery. Despite the loss, the 35-year-old Japanese player made an impressive return to the final after battling back from a series of injuries, including major hip surgery, and was playing in his first tour-level final since 2019.
Muller praised Nishikori for his remarkable comeback, noting the significance of his performance. Nishikori’s journey to the final included victories over several top players, including Karen Khachanov, Cameron Norrie, and Denis Shapovalov. With his strong showing, he will return to the top 100 in the ATP rankings for the first time since June 2022.
