Alexandra Stevenson Urges Coco Gauff to Fix Serve Issues Ahead of 2026

Posted : 17 December 2025

Coco Gauff has experienced a breakthrough year in 2025, consolidating her place among tennis’ elite. The young American star captured her first French Open title, added a second Grand Slam to her collection, and successfully defended her WTA 1000 crown in Beijing, signaling that her hard work and dedication are paying off.

Despite her remarkable achievements, Gauff faces a challenge that could affect her trajectory if left unaddressed. The 19-year-old ended the season with 431 double faults, a statistic that has drawn attention from former players and analysts alike. Alexandra Stevenson, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, singled this out as an issue Gauff should be able to fix without delay.

Speaking on the Inside-In podcast, Stevenson emphasized the importance of correcting the serve before focusing on other technical elements. “Technically, there are things she should be able to correct immediately. The serve and forehand go hand in hand... but I think the serve should have been corrected first,” she explained, highlighting a potential flaw in Gauff’s current coaching approach.

Stevenson argued that addressing the serve is crucial because it directly impacts other aspects of Gauff’s game. Losing control of the serve can disrupt her forehand rhythm, something she described as a fundamental issue in professional tennis. By prioritizing the serve, Stevenson believes Gauff can enhance her overall game stability.

Data from the 2025 season supports Stevenson’s concern. Although Gauff’s exceptional athleticism and world-class return game allowed her to win nearly half of her return points, her high number of double faults represents a risk that could undermine long-term performance if not corrected.

Gavin MacMillan, a biomechanics expert working with Gauff, stressed that the goal extends beyond merely reducing errors. In an interview with Tennis Channel, he clarified that refining the serve is about creating a genuine weapon for Gauff. Establishing a reliable and effective kick serve is central to her strategy moving forward.
