Philippine tennis star Alexandra Eala has been eliminated from the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo after suffering a three-set defeat to Russia's Diana Shnaider in Friday's quarter-finals. Despite the disappointment, the 21-year-old remains focused on ending her impressive 2026 campaign on a positive note at next week's tournament in Hong Kong.
Eala, currently ranked 19th in the world, lost 2-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 to the third-seeded Shnaider in her first appearance at the WTA 500 competition. The Filipino enjoyed a strong start but was unable to maintain her advantage as the Russian fought back to claim victory.
Speaking after the match, Eala expressed enthusiasm about her upcoming appearance in Hong Kong, insisting that she remains highly motivated despite her Tokyo exit. She explained that she would postpone reflecting on her achievements until the season officially concludes, preferring to concentrate on her final tournament.
The defeat followed an encouraging opening set in which Eala recovered from an early setback to win five consecutive games and establish control. However, Shnaider raised her level in the second set, forcing a tie-break that she eventually won 7-5 after a closely contested exchange.
The deciding set proved equally challenging, with Shnaider securing an early break to put Eala under pressure. The Filipino also required medical attention for a foot problem before the Russian sealed the contest with an ace to complete her comeback.
Eala described the encounter as a demanding battle, acknowledging that both players produced high-quality tennis. Although disappointed with the outcome, she was pleased with her overall performance and admitted that she could have taken better advantage of several important opportunities.
The Filipina also praised the support she received from her travelling supporters in Japan, highlighting the special atmosphere created by the large Filipino contingent. She said competing in front of such passionate fans made the experience particularly memorable and reaffirmed her affection for Japan.
Eala's 2026 season has been a landmark year, highlighted by her historic triumph at the Washington Open in August, where she became the first player from the Philippines to win a singles title on the WTA Tour.
Attention now shifts to Hong Kong, where she will have another opportunity to build on her progress and finish the season with another strong performance.
Meanwhile, Shnaider advanced to the Tokyo semi-finals, where she is scheduled to face Slovakia's Mia Pohankova. The teenager booked her place in the last four with a victory over American Alycia Parks.
The other semi-final will feature Uzbekistan's Kamilla Rakhimova against Canada's Leylah Fernandez, who progressed after world number one Elena Rybakina withdrew because of a neck injury.
