Alexandra Eala Stuns Elena Rybakina to Reach Berlin Open Quarter-Finals

Posted : 19 June 2026

Filipino tennis sensation Alexandra Eala produced one of the biggest upsets of the grass-court season by defeating world number two Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-4 at the Berlin Open on Thursday.

The victory earned Eala a place in the quarter-finals of the prestigious Wimbledon warm-up event and marked another significant milestone in her rapidly rising career. The 21-year-old admitted she was overwhelmed with emotion after sealing the win, revealing she was still shaking moments after converting match point.

Eala praised Rybakina after the match, describing the former Wimbledon champion as one of the toughest competitors on the tour. The pair had previously met on clay at the Italian Open in May, where Rybakina emerged victorious, making Thursday’s result a measure of revenge for the young Filipino.

The match initially appeared to be heading in Rybakina’s favour as the Kazakh star raced into a 4-1 lead in the opening set. However, Eala responded impressively, breaking Rybakina’s usually reliable serve twice and steadily shifting the momentum in her direction before claiming the set.

Confidence continued to grow for the world number 35 in the second set. Eala remained composed under pressure and secured another crucial break of serve, maintaining control against her higher-ranked opponent to complete a memorable straight-sets triumph.

The result further highlights Eala’s strong form on grass courts. Earlier in the tournament, she defeated Donna Vekic, fresh from her title-winning run at the Queen’s Club Championships, demonstrating that her success in Berlin is no coincidence.

Eala has already made history as the first Filipino player to break into the WTA top 50, and her latest victory reinforces her growing reputation as one of the most promising talents on the women’s tour.

Awaiting her in the quarter-finals is Elina Svitolina, who progressed after a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over Germany’s Eva Lys. The upcoming clash will provide Eala with another major test as she looks to continue her impressive run.

Elsewhere in the Berlin Open quarter-final lineup, world number one Aryna Sabalenka is set to face Nikola Bartunkova, while Jessica Pegula will meet fellow American Madison Keys. Another intriguing quarter-final will see Linda Noskova take on Paula Badosa.

With Wimbledon approaching, Eala’s breakthrough performance in Berlin has established her as a player capable of challenging the sport’s biggest names on grass and could make her one of the dark horses heading into the Grand Slam.
