Alexandra Eala Stuns Defending Champion Leylah Fernandez to Reach Washington Open Quarterfinals

Philippine tennis sensation Alexandra Eala continued her impressive rise by knocking out defending champion Leylah Fernandez to advance to the quarterfinals of the Washington Open on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old defeated the seventh-seeded Canadian 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), producing a remarkable comeback in the second set after trailing 5-1. Eala maintained her composure to recover, force a tie-break, and seal the victory with an outstanding display of resilience.

Eala dominated the opening set as Fernandez struggled with a series of unforced errors. Momentum shifted in the second set when the Canadian raced into a commanding lead, but Eala gradually turned the match around, winning five consecutive games to move ahead before Fernandez held serve to extend the contest into a tie-break.

The Filipina carried her momentum into the decider, taking an early 3-0 advantage in the tie-break. Although Fernandez briefly responded, Eala produced a brilliant cross-court forehand to earn five match points and converted the first opportunity to complete one of the biggest wins of her season.

Reflecting on her performance, Eala admitted the emotions of the victory had yet to sink in. She said her focus remained on staying composed throughout the match and being prepared for every situation, adding that her determination ultimately paid off.

The victory avenged her straight-sets loss to Fernandez in Stuttgart earlier this year and sends Eala into her fifth WTA Tour quarterfinal of an outstanding campaign. She will next face either second seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine or Uzbekistan's Polina Kudermetova.

Eala has enjoyed a breakthrough year, climbing to world No. 28 after becoming the first player from the Philippines to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam by defeating Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon. Her latest success follows another impressive comeback earlier in the week, when she defeated China's Zheng Qinwen in three sets after more than two hours on court.
