Alexandra Eala Sparks Tennis Boom Across the Philippines

Posted : 14 August 2026

Alexandra Eala’s breakthrough on the international tennis stage is inspiring a new generation of Filipino players and triggering a surge of interest in the sport across the Philippines. The 21-year-old has become a national sporting figure after making history with her performances on the WTA Tour, including her first WTA singles title in Washington earlier this month.

The growing popularity is particularly noticeable among children, with parents increasingly searching for coaching sessions and court time. Tennis officials say Eala’s success has encouraged families to believe their own children could potentially follow a similar path, while demand for courts has risen sharply in Manila.

The increased interest is also being felt by sporting retailers. Decathlon has reported a significant rise in sales of beginner tennis racquets, while the company has adjusted its marketing and store displays to reflect Eala’s growing influence.

Access to facilities remains a major challenge, however. The Philippines has relatively few tennis courts for its large population, with many facilities requiring memberships or being difficult to book. The country also has distinctive courts made from crushed seashells, sand and clay, which are cheaper to construct and maintain than traditional red-clay courts.

Eala’s own journey highlights the challenges facing aspiring Filipino players. She left the Philippines at 13 after receiving a scholarship to train at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Spain, eventually becoming the highest-ranked Filipina player in WTA history.

Her rise has also generated extraordinary support from Filipinos overseas, with large groups of fans regularly attending her matches around the world. Her recent success at Wimbledon and her historic Washington title have further strengthened her status as an inspiration for young athletes back home.

Philippine tennis authorities are now working to expand opportunities for the next generation. A government-backed National Tennis Centre is planned north of Manila, featuring an academy and an 8,000-capacity stadium, as officials look to turn the current Eala-driven enthusiasm into lasting growth for the sport.
