Alexandra Eala Stuns Naomi Osaka to Reach Washington Open Final

Alexandra Eala continued her remarkable breakthrough season by defeating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-2 to book her place in the Washington Open final. The 21-year-old Filipina delivered another composed performance to reach her first WTA 500 final, where she will take on world number three Jessica Pegula.

Eala's latest victory further underlines her rapid rise on the WTA Tour. Having started the year outside the world's top 50, she is now guaranteed a career-high ranking of world No. 24. The win over Osaka also marked her sixth victory against a top-10 opponent this season, adding to an impressive campaign that included ending Iga Swiatek's Wimbledon title defence and becoming the first Filipina in the Open Era to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon.

The rising star has enjoyed a superb run in Washington, defeating second seed Elina Svitolina, defending champion Leylah Fernandez and now Osaka without dropping a set in the semi-final. Against the Japanese star, Eala excelled behind her serve, winning the majority of her first-serve points while remaining solid on her second serve throughout the 76-minute contest.

Reflecting on her improvement, Eala credited her physical development and stronger all-round game for her recent success.

"I'm more well-rounded now. I'm physically stronger, I played really well, maintained a great mentality and stayed focused until the end," she said after the match.

Awaiting her in the final is top seed Jessica Pegula, who recovered from 5-2 down in the opening set to defeat Russia's Diana Shnaider 7-5, 6-4. Pegula, chasing another Washington title, described Eala as "the future of the tour" ahead of their championship clash. The American won their previous meeting in last year's Miami Open semi-finals, but Eala enters the contest with significantly greater confidence and momentum.

In the men's singles, third seed Taylor Fritz advanced to the final after defeating fellow American Brandon Nakashima in three sets. He will face Spain's Rafael Jodar, whose impressive run is set to propel him into the world's top 20 after another comeback victory in the semi-finals.
