Alexander Zverev Survives Another Five-Set Thriller to Reach US Open Third Round

Top seed Alexander Zverev survived another demanding five-set battle at the US Open, defeating France’s Quentin Halys 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-3 to advance to the third round. The German needed four hours and 33 minutes to secure victory in a match that finished at 2:15 a.m. local time.

The victory means Zverev has now gone the distance in each of his opening two matches in New York. He was also pushed to five sets by Lorenzo Sonego in the first round, leaving the French Open champion with more than nine hours of tennis across his first two encounters.

Zverev struggled for consistency against world No. 52 Halys, who repeatedly threatened to turn the match in his favour. After splitting the opening four sets, the German finally found enough composure in the deciding set to pull away and complete another hard-fought victory.

The 29-year-old admitted afterwards that his performance was far from his best but was pleased to have found a way through. Zverev is competing at a Grand Slam as the top seed for the first time and is targeting his first US Open championship after finishing runner-up at Flushing Meadows in 2020.

Zverev's path to the latter stages has opened considerably following a series of major upsets. Lorenzo Musetti, the 13th seed and a potential fourth-round opponent, was eliminated by Australian wildcard Dane Sweeny. Sweeny recovered from losing the first set to beat Musetti 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Seventh seed Alex de Minaur also departed in the second round, losing to Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp. Those results leave Zverev as the only player ranked inside the world's top 20 remaining in his section of the draw.

His next opponent will be 25th seed Alejandro Tabilo, who progressed by defeating Alexei Popyrin. Zverev has won all of his previous meetings with the Chilean and will now have to recover quickly from another lengthy night on court.

The German remains among the leading contenders for the title, particularly with world No. 1 Jannik Sinner absent through injury. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is also on the opposite side of the draw, meaning Zverev could meet the Spaniard only in the final.
