Alexander Zverev stunned in first round of Mexico Open by Daniel Altmaier

Posted : 28 February 2024

Top seed Alexander Zverev suffered an early exit from the Mexico Open on Tuesday, losing to German compatriot Daniel Altmaier in three sets. Altmaier, ranked 57th in the world, secured a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Zverev, the 2021 Acapulco tournament winner.

Altmaier dominated the third set, taking a 2-0 lead with an early break and ultimately serving out the match. His next challenge is a second-round clash with Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic.

In another match on Tuesday, Australia's Jordan Thompson faced defeat just two days after winning his first ATP title. Thompson, who emerged victorious at the Los Cabos Open final on Sunday, lost in three sets to American qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-3, 5-7, 6-4). Kovacevic is set to meet Holger Rune in the second round after the Danish second seed comfortably beat Michael Mmoh 6-2, 6-3.

Fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece had a smooth start, defeating Russian Roman Safiullin 6-3, 6-4. Tsitsipas is scheduled to face Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli in the second round. Reflecting on his win, Tsitsipas acknowledged the challenge posed by Safiullin, who plays well on similar surfaces.

Meanwhile, sixth-seeded Casper Ruud, coming off a defeat in the Los Cabos final, secured a three-set victory over Christopher Eubanks (6-4, 6-7, 6-3). American eighth seed Frances Tiafoe also advanced, overcoming Australia's Max Purcell 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, and will face Germany's Dominik Koepfer in the next round. Koepfer won 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 against France's Terence Atmane.
