Alexander Zverev has secured the year-end world No. 1 ranking for the first time in his career after Carlos Alcaraz suffered an unexpected defeat at the Shanghai Masters on Monday. Belgium’s Zizou Bergs defeated the Spanish star 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) in the third round, ending Alcaraz’s hopes of overtaking Zverev before the season concludes.
The German’s achievement also comes as current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner is sidelined by a knee injury that has ended his 2026 campaign. With Sinner out of contention and Alcaraz eliminated in Shanghai, Zverev has secured the season-ending honour regardless of the remaining results.
Zverev described the milestone as a dream come true, reflecting on a season that has seen him capture major titles in Paris and New York. The 29-year-old’s success marks a significant turning point in his career after previously reaching three Grand Slam finals without winning a title.
The German claimed his maiden Grand Slam championship at the French Open in June before adding the US Open trophy later in the year. His achievements have helped establish him at the top of men’s tennis amid injury setbacks affecting two of the tour’s leading players.
Zverev will become the first German man to finish a season as the world’s top-ranked player. He will also be the oldest player to achieve the year-end No. 1 distinction for the first time, adding a historic dimension to his breakthrough season. Although the year-end outcome is confirmed, he is not expected to move above Sinner in the official live rankings until November 2 at the earliest.
The accomplishment carries added significance given Zverev’s recovery from a serious ankle injury sustained during the 2022 French Open semi-finals. The injury kept him away from competition for approximately seven months, but he gradually returned to the sport’s elite and has remained inside the world’s top four since March 2024.
Reflecting on his comeback, Zverev credited the hard work and persistence required to reach the summit of the rankings. He said he was eager to conclude the season strongly, with his year-end No. 1 status now assured.
Meanwhile, Bergs’ victory over Alcaraz represents a major breakthrough for the Belgian, who produced a composed performance to secure one of the biggest wins of his career. The result reshaped the Shanghai tournament and confirmed Zverev’s place at the top of the 2026 ATP season standings.
