Alexander Zverev made a winning start to his China Open campaign on Thursday, defeating Britain's Cameron Norrie 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 in Beijing. The German is the tournament's top seed after defending champion Jannik Sinner withdrew because of injury.
Zverev produced 15 aces and remained composed during the key moments against the world No. 39. Norrie put pressure on the second-ranked German throughout the opening set, but Zverev raised his level in the tie-break to take control.
The second set remained close, with both players protecting their serves until Zverev finally found his opportunity in the 10th game. He converted his first match point to complete the victory and maintain his unbeaten record against Norrie.
The victory continued an impressive stretch for Zverev, who recently won the US Open before travelling to London for the Laver Cup. He arrived in Beijing only two days before his opening match but said he was pleased with the level he produced despite the demanding schedule.
Zverev will next face China's Shang Juncheng, who advanced to the second round after defeating Argentina's Sebastian Baez. The German is seeking his first China Open title after previously reaching the semi-finals three times.
In the women's draw, home favourite Zheng Qinwen survived a difficult opening-round battle against compatriot Shi Han. The Olympic champion won 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-2 after two hours and 44 minutes to reach the second round.
Zheng recovered after losing the second set and broke twice in the deciding set to secure the victory. She will next meet 15th seed Anna Kalinskaya, with their career head-to-head record level at 1-1.
Elsewhere in Beijing, Roman Safiullin defeated French Open finalist Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-2, while Hubert Hurkacz overcame American Learner Tien 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Safiullin will face fellow Russian Andrey Rublev in the next round.
