Alexander Zverev has expressed his delight at reaching the top of men's tennis, describing his rise to world No. 1 as a particularly meaningful achievement as he prepares for the Paris Masters.
The German enters the tournament as the top seed, having secured his position at the summit of the ATP rankings through his performances throughout the season. He also celebrated the milestone on court by posing with the ATP world No. 1 trophy.
Zverev's journey to the top has included several challenges, with injuries and the emergence of rivals such as Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz making his pursuit of major honours more difficult. However, the 29-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable season, adding the French Open and US Open titles to his growing collection of achievements.
Speaking about the difference between winning a Grand Slam and becoming world No. 1, Zverev explained that both achievements carry different emotional significance. He recalled the disappointment of losing several major finals before finally securing his first Grand Slam title, describing that breakthrough as the greatest relief of his career.
The German added that reaching the top of the rankings requires maintaining an exceptional level of performance throughout an entire season, making the world No. 1 achievement equally special.
Zverev will begin his Paris Masters campaign on Wednesday against Italy's Lorenzo Musetti. The German faces a challenging opening match, having lost three of their previous five meetings.
