Alexander Zverev delivered an impressive performance to defeat Australia’s Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday and secure his place in the Shanghai Masters semifinals. The top seed controlled key moments of the quarterfinal, producing powerful groundstrokes and serving effectively to progress in straight sets.
The German faced a stern test from De Minaur’s speed and defensive ability early in the match. However, Zverev found his rhythm in the first set, using a series of aggressive forehands to break his opponent in the fifth game. He then saved three consecutive break points before closing out the set with an impressive backhand at the net.
Zverev maintained the pressure in the second set, creating another break opportunity in the seventh game. De Minaur’s serve faltered at a crucial moment, allowing the German to move ahead 4-3. Zverev stayed composed from there and converted his first match point to complete the victory.
After the match, Zverev described the performance as a significant improvement on his previous outings. He said he was pleased with his level, particularly after needing three sets to win each of his two preceding matches.
The victory sends Zverev into his third Shanghai Masters semifinal and his first since 2019. He has also secured the year-end world No. 1 ranking, adding another milestone to an impressive season.
Zverev’s next opponent will be Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who advanced after France’s Arthur Gea retired from their quarterfinal with an injury. Gea was trailing 4-1 in the opening set when he stopped playing after receiving medical treatment for pain in his lower-right back area.
The 21-year-old Frenchman said he had experienced pain in his psoas muscle during his morning warm-up. Although he attempted to compete, he decided to withdraw because continuing could have put the remainder of his season at risk.
Davidovich Fokina will now face Zverev for a place in the final, as the German continues his pursuit of the Shanghai title.
