Alexander Zverev Cruises Into US Open Semifinals With Straight-Sets Win

Alexander Zverev continued his pursuit of a second Grand Slam title by producing a commanding performance against Botic van de Zandschulp to reach the US Open semifinals. The top-seeded German defeated the Dutchman 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, extending his impressive run at the majors in 2026.

The 29-year-old arrived in New York as the reigning French Open champion after claiming his maiden Grand Slam title in Paris earlier this year. He also reached the Wimbledon final, and his latest victory means he is the only man to have reached the semifinals at all four Grand Slam tournaments this season.

Zverev took control of the quarter-final from the opening set, breaking van de Zandschulp twice to establish an early advantage. The Dutchman, ranked 70th in the world, responded with greater resistance in the second set and had an opportunity to level the match when he earned set point while leading 5-4.

However, Zverev remained composed under pressure. Van de Zandschulp failed to convert the opportunity, and the German immediately regained momentum by leveling at 5-5 before breaking again. Zverev then served out the set to move within one set of victory.

Any hopes of a comeback disappeared quickly in the third set. Zverev broke twice to move 4-1 ahead before adding another break late in the set, completing a 2-hour, 17-minute victory with a dominant 6-1 finish.

The win also continued Zverev's remarkable Grand Slam consistency this year. He has now collected 23 major-match victories in 2026, surpassing Boris Becker's previous German men's record of 22 Grand Slam wins in a calendar year, set in 1989.

Zverev will face Karen Khachanov in Friday's semifinal. The Russian advanced after Belgian Alexander Blockx retired from their quarter-final because of injury, giving Khachanov another opportunity to reach a Grand Slam final.

For Zverev, the route to a second major title remains open after another convincing performance. Having steadily improved following a difficult start to the tournament, the German now needs two more victories to add the US Open crown to his French Open triumph.
