Alexander Zverev began his French Open campaign in commanding fashion on Sunday, easing past France’s Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to book his place in the second round at Roland Garros.
Playing under intense heat on Court Philippe Chatrier, the German second seed took just over two hours to dispatch world number 95 Bonzi on the opening day of the clay-court Grand Slam.
Zverev set the tone early, breaking serve in the sixth game of the first set to take control of the match. Both players exchanged breaks in the second set, but the German capitalised at a crucial moment to move ahead and then closed out the set with a confident hold.
In sweltering conditions with temperatures rising above 30°C, Zverev maintained his dominance in the third set, racing through the final stretch to seal a straight-sets victory and secure his place in the round of 64.
Speaking after the match, Zverev described it as a solid start to his tournament and expressed satisfaction with his overall performance. He will next face Czech player Tomáš Macháč, who also advanced after a straight-sets win over Zizou Bergs.
Elsewhere, seventh seed Taylor Fritz suffered a major setback as he was eliminated in the first round following a dramatic five-set defeat to American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy.
Fritz, who has struggled with a knee injury in recent months, appeared short of rhythm as he returned to clay after a disrupted preparation period. Despite his higher ranking, he was unable to handle the composure and aggressive play of the 21-year-old opponent.
The opening two sets were tightly contested, both decided by tiebreaks, with Basavareddy showing greater consistency under pressure to take a two-set lead. Fritz fought back to win the third set in a tense tiebreak after saving a match point, briefly shifting momentum.
However, Basavareddy regained control in the fourth set, producing an assured performance to close out a memorable victory and claim his first top-10 win. The young American will now face either Alexander Shevchenko or Alex Michelsen in the second round.
