Alexander Zverev Beats Ben Shelton to Win First US Open Title

Posted : 14 September 2026

Alexander Zverev finally erased the painful memories of his 2020 US Open final defeat by overcoming Ben Shelton 6–3, 7–6(2), 5–7, 6–2 to win his first title at Flushing Meadows. The German top seed added another major trophy to his 2026 season after previously triumphing at Roland Garros.

Zverev had come agonisingly close to winning the US Open six years ago, surrendering a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem before eventually losing in five sets. This time, however, he remained composed through a demanding four-set contest to complete his second Grand Slam victory of the year.

Shelton entered his first Grand Slam final with enormous expectations from the home crowd after producing an impressive run in New York. The American defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set quarter-final before overcoming compatriot Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals.

The 23-year-old was also attempting to become the first American man since Andy Roddick in 2003 to win a Grand Slam singles title. Despite the support inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, Shelton struggled to find his rhythm early as Zverev took control of the opening two sets.

Shelton refused to surrender and mounted his strongest challenge in the third set. He secured his first break of the match while serving to stay in the contest and converted the opportunity to force a fourth set, giving the packed New York crowd renewed hope of a remarkable comeback.

Zverev responded immediately, breaking Shelton in the opening game of the fourth set. The German maintained his composure despite the pressure and closed out the championship with a 6–2 fourth set, completing a victory that lasted three hours and 33 minutes.

The triumph capped Zverev's strongest Grand Slam season. He has now won two majors in 2026 and also reached the Wimbledon final, while his US Open success finally removes one of the most painful chapters of his career.

Shelton's defeat extended the wait for an American men's Grand Slam singles champion, with Roddick remaining the last US man to lift a major trophy at the 2003 US Open. Nevertheless, Shelton's breakthrough run to his first major final represents a significant milestone in his young career.
