Alexander Zverev, Andre Agassi Defend Laver Cup Ahead of London Edition

Alexander Zverev and Team World captain Andre Agassi have backed the Laver Cup ahead of the ninth edition of the three-day team competition at London’s O2 Arena. The event runs from September 25 to 27 and brings together leading players from Europe and the rest of the world.

The tournament features major names including Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, Alex de Minaur, Jakub Mensik and teenage Spaniard Rafael Jodar. Zverev arrives in London as the reigning US Open champion, while Alcaraz will join him on Team Europe under captain Yannick Noah.

The Laver Cup was created in 2017 from an idea associated with Roger Federer and is modelled in part on golf’s Ryder Cup. It offers a different format from traditional tennis, with six players representing Team Europe against six from Team World across singles and doubles matches over three days.

Agassi, who is serving as Team World captain for a second year, said the competition provides a different atmosphere from the individual nature of most professional tennis. Team World won the 2025 edition in San Francisco, defeating Europe 15-9, and Agassi believes the format creates opportunities for intense competition and strong team camaraderie.

Zverev has also remained committed to the event despite its position in an already demanding tennis calendar. The German has competed in the Laver Cup several times and was part of Team Europe teams that won the competition in Prague, Chicago, Geneva, Boston and Berlin.

The 29-year-old has another reason to celebrate in London after winning his first Grand Slam title at the US Open earlier this month. He defeated Ben Shelton in the final and then joined his fellow Team Europe players for the Laver Cup, where he will again line up alongside Alcaraz.

Arthur Fery will also be part of the European team environment as an alternate. The British player has enjoyed a breakthrough season and will train and remain on standby alongside the six selected players in case he is required to compete. The Laver Cup confirmed Fery as Team Europe’s alternate, with Ignacio Buse holding the corresponding role for Team World.

The London event will see Team Europe attempt to respond after Team World’s victory in San Francisco last year. The competition returns to the O2 for the first time since 2022, when the venue hosted Roger Federer’s final professional appearance.
