Alexander Bublik Stuns Medvedev in Halle Final

Posted : 23 June 2025

Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik achieved a career milestone on Sunday by defeating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev for the first time in seven attempts, winning the Halle Open with a straight-sets victory. Bublik, ranked 45th in the world, prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) in an hour and 22 minutes, clinching his second grass-court title in Halle and his fifth career ATP title. The win comes at a crucial moment, just one week before Wimbledon, and marks a turning point in Bublik’s career following a difficult year.

Bublik’s path to the title was impressive, including a stunning upset over world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the second round. Against Medvedev, the third seed, Bublik broke serve to take the first set and displayed remarkable composure in the second.

He saved a crucial break point and set point at 4-5 with a deft drop shot, eventually sealing the match in the tiebreak with a service winner. “From the mental point of view, that’s the toughest match I’ve ever played in my life,” Bublik admitted, adding that beating Medvedev, a player he once felt “cursed” against, was a career highlight.

The 28-year-old, who had dropped out of the top 75 following last year’s Wimbledon and nearly retired from the sport, credited his resilience for the turnaround. With this victory, Bublik will rise to No. 30 in the ATP rankings on Monday, marking a significant recovery. His growing grass-court reputation now includes back-to-back titles in Halle (2023 and 2025), alongside previous wins in Montpellier and Antwerp.

Daniil Medvedev, who had not reached a final in 15 months, saw his losing streak in ATP finals extend to six, with his last title coming in Rome in May 2023. Despite the defeat, Medvedev maintained a light-hearted tone during the trophy ceremony, jokingly urging Wimbledon contenders Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to face Bublik instead of him. The match ended with praise from tennis legend Boris Becker, who commended Bublik’s aggressive and inspired grass-court play during the presentation.
