Alex Michelsen Stuns Brandon Nakashima to Reach US Open Third Round

Alex Michelsen produced one of the biggest American upsets at the 2026 US Open, defeating 16th seed Brandon Nakashima in straight sets to advance to the third round. The 22-year-old world No. 46 secured a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 victory on Grandstand in their first meeting.

Nakashima entered New York in excellent form after a breakthrough summer on the North American hard courts. The 25-year-old had reached the final in Montreal and semifinals in Washington and Cincinnati, while also climbing to a career-high No. 17 in the rankings last month.

However, he struggled to reproduce that level against Michelsen. The younger American applied consistent pressure from the baseline and used his serve effectively, recovering after Nakashima took an early 2-0 lead in the opening set before taking control of the contest.

Michelsen maintained his momentum throughout the match, breaking Nakashima in the second set and closing it out without dropping a game on serve. He then continued to dictate the rallies in the third set, eventually sealing the upset after one hour and 56 minutes.

The victory sends Michelsen into the US Open third round for the fourth time at a Grand Slam. His next opponent will be Spain's Daniel Mérida, who eliminated 23rd seed Andrey Rublev in four sets.

For Nakashima, the defeat ended an impressive run of form on American hard courts. Despite his disappointment, he said there were plenty of positives to take from a summer in which he achieved several career milestones.

Nakashima also acknowledged the increased attention and expectations that came with his recent success. He said he would need to embrace the pressure while finding ways to block out outside noise and concentrate on his tennis.
