Alex Eala Opens Up on Fan Frenzy and Reveals Why Rafael Nadal Still Intimidates Her

Posted : 02 November 2026

Philippine tennis star Alex Eala has spoken about the extraordinary attention she has received during her breakthrough season, admitting that the scale of support from fans initially left her surprised.

The 21-year-old recalled her first Australian Open main-draw appearance in January, when thousands of Filipino supporters gathered at Melbourne Park to watch her face American Alycia Parks. Despite losing the match, Eala took time to acknowledge the crowd before being escorted away by security because of the overwhelming attention.

Speaking to AFP ahead of the Hong Kong Open, Eala described the experience as unexpected and difficult to forget. Although she had encountered enthusiastic supporters before, she said the size of the Melbourne crowd was unlike anything she had previously experienced.

Her popularity has continued to grow following a remarkable year on the WTA Tour. Eala reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, recording her best Grand Slam performance, before producing another historic achievement in Washington.

The Filipina defeated four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the semifinals before overcoming top seed Jessica Pegula to win the title. That success made her the first player from the Philippines to claim a WTA Tour singles championship.

She has since climbed to a career-high world ranking of 17, attracting substantial support from Filipino communities wherever she competes.

Eala believes acknowledging those supporters is an important part of her relationship with them. She explained that taking time to interact with fans, even after disappointing results, is her way of showing appreciation for their encouragement.

The young star is also benefiting from opportunities to learn from some of tennis's most accomplished players. She recently shared the court with 46-year-old Venus Williams in doubles and has been impressed by the American's approach to competition.

Eala highlighted Williams' aggressive mentality and exceptional dedication to training as qualities she admires. She said observing the former world number one closely has given her valuable lessons about what it takes to remain successful at the highest level.

Another influential figure in her development is Rafael Nadal, having trained at the Spaniard's academy in Mallorca. The 22-time Grand Slam champion has remained supportive of Eala's progress and maintains contact with her coaching team.

Nadal previously praised the Filipina's character, describing her as humble, approachable and warm despite the growing attention surrounding her career.

Eala revealed that the pair occasionally exchange messages, with Nadal offering congratulations on her achievements and the player also reaching out on special occasions connected to the academy.

Although she considers Nadal approachable and down-to-earth, Eala admitted that being around the legendary former player can still make her nervous.

She also expressed admiration for the opportunity to learn from someone whose achievements have shaped modern tennis, recognising the value of having access to his experience.

Currently competing at the Hong Kong Open as the second seed, Eala will face Parks again in her opening match. The tournament provides another opportunity for the rising star to build on an outstanding season and continue strengthening her position among the world's leading players.
