Alex Eala Breaks Down in Tears After Claire Liu Ends Her Hong Kong Open Title Hopes

Posted : 08 November 2026

Philippine tennis star Alexandra Eala was overcome with emotion as she reflected on a remarkable 2026 campaign after missing out on a second WTA Tour title in the final of the Hong Kong Open on Sunday.

The 21-year-old suffered a disappointing 6-3, 6-0 defeat to American qualifier Claire Liu, who entered the tournament ranked 102nd in the world and secured the first WTA Tour title of her career.

Despite the setback, Eala has enjoyed a breakthrough season that has transformed her position in women's tennis. Currently ranked a career-high 17th in the world, she is expected to climb to 15th in the next rankings update, having started the year at No. 50.

Her biggest achievement came in August when she won the Washington DC tournament, becoming the first player from the Philippines to capture a WTA Tour singles title. That historic success established her as one of the most exciting young talents in the sport.

Speaking to the crowd after Sunday's final, Eala described the season as a life-changing experience, expressing gratitude for the progress she and her team had made.

"This season has changed my life, it's changed my life for the better," she said.

The Filipina became visibly emotional while addressing her coaching team and supporters in the stands, acknowledging the sacrifices and hard work behind her impressive rise.

She also expressed pride in their collective achievements, highlighting the challenges they had overcome to reach such an important stage in her career.

"I'm incredibly proud of the work we've put in this year. We're the only ones that truly know what it took to arrive at this point in our journey. This is only the beginning," Eala added.

Meanwhile, Liu produced an outstanding performance to secure the championship despite entering the final as the underdog. The American took control of the contest late in the opening set, breaking Eala's serve in the eighth game to establish a 5-3 advantage at Victoria Park.

Although Liu failed to convert her first set point, she made no mistake with her second opportunity, taking the opening set and leaving Eala's large travelling fanbase disappointed.

Eala had already required medical attention for her right knee during the first set and appeared to struggle physically as the match progressed.

The second set proved particularly difficult for the Filipina. Liu immediately applied pressure to her opponent's serve, eventually securing a crucial break after a lengthy opening game to move ahead.

From that moment, the American maintained complete control, winning nine consecutive games to complete a dominant victory and claim her maiden WTA Tour crown.

Liu's triumph was particularly impressive because she did not drop a single set throughout the tournament, underlining her consistency and quality during the week.

Although Eala missed the opportunity to add another trophy to her collection, her impressive season represents a significant milestone for Philippine tennis and provides a strong foundation for further success in the coming years.
