Alex de Minaur Defeats Tsitsipas to Set Up All-Australian Clash with Cruz Hewitt

Defending Washington Open champion Alex de Minaur kept his title defense on track with a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday, earning a place in the second round where he will face fellow Australian Cruz Hewitt.

The tournament's top seed overcame a difficult challenge from the former world No. 3, improving on a head-to-head record that had heavily favored Tsitsipas. Before this encounter, the Greek star had won 12 of their previous 13 meetings, making De Minaur's latest triumph one of his most significant against the longtime rival.

The Australian endured an inconsistent start, saving an early break point before surrendering serve with consecutive double faults. However, he quickly regained control by breaking Tsitsipas twice and held firm under pressure to claim the opening set.

Tsitsipas responded strongly in the second set, securing an early break and maintaining his advantage to level the contest. In the deciding set, De Minaur capitalized on an unforced error from the Greek to gain the crucial break before confidently serving out the match.

After the victory, De Minaur acknowledged his difficult history against Tsitsipas but said he was pleased with the way he approached the contest. He noted that many of his previous defeats came earlier in his career before he developed into the player he is today.

The win sets up an intriguing all-Australian encounter against 17-year-old Cruz Hewitt, who recently celebrated the first ATP Tour victory of his career. Hewitt, the son of former world No. 1 and Australian tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt, has emerged as one of the tournament's exciting young prospects.

Looking ahead to the matchup, De Minaur joked that he fully expects Lleyton Hewitt to support his son during the match. He also praised the former Grand Slam champion, describing him as an important mentor who has played a significant role in his own development over the years.
