Alcaraz Targets Indian Wells Three-Peat Amid Potential Djokovic Showdown

Posted : 05 March 2025

Carlos Alcaraz is set to defend his Indian Wells title with a measured approach as he aims to become only the third man to claim three consecutive victories at the tournament. The 20-year-old Spaniard could potentially face Novak Djokovic, one of the two players to have achieved this feat, in the quarterfinals.

Despite the historic implications, Alcaraz remains focused on enjoying the competition rather than dwelling on records, emphasizing his love for playing at Indian Wells and his intent to "just flow" through the tournament. Coming off a quarterfinal exit at the Qatar Open, he enters the event as the second seed behind Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who was runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open.

Sinner’s absence from the tournament, following a delayed three-month ban for an anti-doping violation, does not alter Alcaraz’s mindset, as he maintains that the field remains highly competitive. He insists that his focus is solely on his own performance, with the draw still presenting formidable challenges.

Among his potential opponents, Djokovic, a five-time Indian Wells champion, could pose the biggest threat in the later rounds. The Serbian leads their head-to-head record 5-3, including a quarterfinal victory at the Australian Open earlier this year. Meanwhile, Djokovic will begin his campaign against the winner of a qualifier versus Nick Kyrgios, who previously pushed him in the 2022 Wimbledon final.

Elsewhere in the draw, top-seeded Zverev is pursuing his first Indian Wells crown, while third seed Taylor Fritz seeks to reclaim the title he won in 2022. Fourth-seeded Casper Ruud and fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, who has finished runner-up to Alcaraz in the past two editions, also aim to make deep runs.

Wild card Joao Fonseca, an 18-year-old Brazilian rising star, will draw significant attention as he begins his campaign against Britain’s Jacob Fearnley. Fonseca recently stunned Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open and secured his first ATP title in Buenos Aires, making him a player to watch in the early rounds.
