Carlos Alcaraz made a strong start to his French Open title defense on Monday, securing a straight-sets victory over Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. The young Spaniard fired 31 winners and will next face Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the second round.
Alcaraz is currently on an eight-match winning streak at Roland Garros and recently won prestigious clay tournaments including the Monte Carlo Masters and the Italian Open, showing excellent form ahead of this year’s Grand Slam. Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner, world No. 1 and recent finalist in Rome, is set for a tough night match against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.
On the women’s side, three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek cruised through her opening match with a solid 6-3, 6-3 win over Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova, breaking her opponent four times in the match.
Despite a challenging period since her last French Open triumph, Swiatek’s dominant record at Roland Garros stands at 36-2, highlighting her strong connection with the tournament. She will face former US Open champion Emma Raducanu next, who made it through her first-round match in Paris since 2022.
The tournament also saw some surprises, with American fourth seed Taylor Fritz becoming one of the early exits after losing to Germany’s Daniel Altmaier. Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam winner, was knocked out by Spain’s Paula Badosa in a tight three-set encounter, continuing her struggle to advance deep in the French Open.
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina advanced after a hard-fought victory, while American Emma Navarro suffered a heavy defeat against Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
