Alcaraz Reaches Italian Open Semifinals with Win Over Draper

Carlos Alcaraz continued his strong form at the Italian Open with a straight-sets victory over Jack Draper, winning 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semifinals. The Spaniard described the performance as one of his most complete matches of the year, praising both his start and finish despite a brief lapse in concentration during the second set.

 

 With this win, Alcaraz not only stays in contention for his third title of the season but also secures the No. 2 spot in the ATP rankings, behind Jannik Sinner, and guarantees himself a top-two seeding for the upcoming French Open.

 

The 21-year-old will next face either defending champion Alexander Zverev or local favorite Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinals at the Foro Italico. Alcaraz's victory also ended Draper’s bid to become the first British man since Andy Murray in 2016 to reach the final four in Rome.

 

After an early lead, Draper struggled to contain Alcaraz's aggressive play, losing momentum after being broken twice in the opening set. The second set featured a crucial 10-minute eighth game where Alcaraz saved two break points before taking control and closing out the match.

 

Elsewhere, Casper Ruud advanced to a quarterfinal showdown with world No. 2 Jannik Sinner after a solid 6-3, 6-4 win over Jaume Munar in a match delayed by rain. Ruud, who is aiming to add a Rome title to his Madrid Open victory, spoke about the mental challenge of waiting to play due to the weather but expressed satisfaction with his performance. The Norwegian holds the distinction of having the most clay-court wins over the past five years and is looking forward to the test against Sinner.

 

Ruud acknowledged the difficulty of the upcoming match, referencing his heavy loss to Sinner in their last meeting at the ATP Finals in Turin. He noted Sinner’s excellent form throughout the tournament and recognized the match as one of the most demanding challenges of his year. As both Alcaraz and Ruud continue their pursuit of the title, the Italian Open semifinals are shaping up to be a thrilling stage in the clay-court season.
