Carlos Alcaraz began his Barcelona Open campaign with a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 win over Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen on Tuesday, as he looks to capture a third title at the tournament. The world number two is aiming to reclaim the top ranking this week after losing the Monte Carlo Masters final to Jannik Sinner.
Alcaraz, who previously won in Barcelona in 2022 and 2023, started slowly but gradually took control of the match as he settled into rhythm in the second set. Despite an early struggle to find his timing, he recovered to dominate proceedings and close out the match in straight sets.
The Spaniard admitted afterward that limited preparation made the start difficult, as he had only one practice session before the match. However, he expressed satisfaction at overcoming early inconsistencies and progressing without dropping a set.
Alcaraz also received treatment on his forearm during the match but downplayed any concern, suggesting it was a minor issue common in a packed tennis schedule. He said he expected to improve further as the tournament progresses.
Virtanen, ranked outside the top 100, competed strongly early on and tested Alcaraz’s serve, but the Spaniard broke at a crucial moment to take the opening set. He then accelerated in the second set, breaking twice to secure a routine victory.
Alcaraz will next face Czech player Tomáš Macháč in the second round as he continues his pursuit of another Barcelona title.
