Alcaraz Saves Two Match Points as Europe Lead Laver Cup 7-5

Carlos Alcaraz overcame Taylor Fritz in a dramatic deciding tie-break as Team Europe moved 7-5 ahead of Team World before the final day of the 2026 Laver Cup in London.

Team World had erased Europe's 3-1 overnight advantage after Learner Tien defeated Flavio Cobolli and Alex de Minaur fought back to beat Alexander Zverev. Both matches went to deciding tie-breaks, putting Team World 5-3 ahead before Alcaraz took to the court.

Alcaraz, who lost to Fritz when Team World won last year's competition in San Francisco, produced a dramatic response at The O2. The Spaniard won the opening set 6-3, but Fritz levelled the contest by taking the second 6-4.

The deciding match tie-break went down to the wire, with Alcaraz saving two match points before completing a 13-11 victory. He sealed the win with a drop shot after Fritz had twice moved within one point of victory.

The victory brought Europe level at 5-5 before the final doubles match of the day. Alcaraz admitted he had been thinking about last year's defeat but said he was pleased to avoid a repeat of that result.

Europe then regained the lead as Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud defeated Alexander Bublik and Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 7-6(7). The European pair held their nerve in a tight second-set tie-break to secure the final two points of the day.

Team Europe therefore enters Sunday's final day with a 7-5 advantage. Under the Laver Cup scoring format, each match on the final day is worth three points, with the first team to reach 13 points crowned champion.
