Alcaraz Downs Fonseca 6-4, 6-4 at Miami Open and Backs Brazilian to Reach the Very Top

Posted : 21 March 2026

Carlos Alcaraz handled the biggest occasion of the Miami Open's early rounds with trademark precision on Friday night, defeating 19-year-old Joao Fonseca 6-4, 6-4 in their first-ever ATP head-to-head meeting at Hard Rock Stadium.

The world No. 1 broke Fonseca early in each set, saved all three break points he faced, hit 26 winners to 22 unforced errors, and landed almost 70% of his first serves. It was a composed and clinical display from the Spaniard, who refused to let the electric atmosphere inside the stadium disrupt his focus.

Alcaraz improved to 17-1 on the season with the victory, pressing home his advantage with an immediate break to open the second set; hitting a backhand lob winner and a backhand down-the-line winner on consecutive points before using a drop shot to break on his third chance of the game.

The match carried a sense of theatre well beyond its second-round billing. A large and vocal Brazilian contingent filled the stands, willing Fonseca on at every turn. Rory McIlroy was also present as a high-profile spectator, and Alcaraz marked the occasion with a golf swing celebration in the Irishman's direction after one particularly sharp point.

Fonseca, for his part, was not outclassed. He earned three break-point chances across the match but converted none of them, with Alcaraz always there to close the door at the critical moments.

The result comes one week after Fonseca pushed world No. 2 Jannik Sinner to two tiebreaks at Indian Wells before falling to the eventual champion. Fonseca drew a sharp contrast between the two rivals after the match, noting that Alcaraz "has more arsenal than Sinner" and that his variety of shots makes the Spaniard harder to read and plan against.

Alcaraz was generous in his post-match assessment. "I think I was really good in crucial moments. I was really good since the beginning until the last ball. I know how good Joao is, and that's why I was really focused, every point, every shot," he said. He drew on his own experience of facing Rafael Nadal for the first time in Madrid in 2021 and used it to frame Fonseca's journey: "I think he has everything, great shots, a lot of things to improve, but for sure he's going to do it. Back-to-back tournaments playing the No. 1 and No. 2 in the world I think is going to be really helpful for him."

The win also extended Alcaraz's remarkable record against players younger than himself in professional competition to 13-0.

Next up for the top seed is a third-round clash with American 32nd seed Sebastian Korda, who eased past Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-0, 6-3 to set the meeting.

Elsewhere in the draw, Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated fifth seed Alex de Minaur 6-3, 7-6 to reach the third round, where he will face Frenchman Arthur Fils.
