Alcaraz Edges Sinner to Claim US Open, Continuing Thrilling 2025 Rivalry

Posted : 08 September 2025

Carlos Alcaraz secured the US Open title on Sunday after a four-set victory over Jannik Sinner, adding another chapter to one of tennis’ most compelling rivalries. Following his 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 triumph, the Spaniard joked that he has been spending more time with his Italian rival than with his own family, highlighting just how frequently the pair have faced each other this season.

Alcaraz and Sinner have met in five finals this year, including the last three Grand Slam finals, a streak that underscores their dominance on the ATP Tour. Their intense on-court rivalry has pushed both players to new levels, and even off the court, the duo has bumped into each other in New York dining spots over the past fortnight. Alcaraz emphasized the importance of their rivalry, stating it motivates him to improve every day and is “super special” for both players and the fans.

The men’s final in New York was slightly delayed due to heightened security measures for the presence of former US President Donald Trump, which included airport-style screening outside Arthur Ashe Stadium. Despite the delay, both players warmed up efficiently, with Alcaraz performing core exercises and Sinner practicing with a mini-football. Once the match began, Alcaraz started strongly, using his superior serving and tactical variety to gain the upper hand.

Sinner responded in the second set, raising his game with aggressive groundstrokes and a more effective return, leveling the match. However, Alcaraz regained control in the third set, capitalizing on his first serve and net play to break Sinner twice and build a decisive lead. In the fourth set, Sinner’s ongoing abdominal issues and uncharacteristic errors allowed Alcaraz to maintain his advantage and serve out the victory, sealing the win with a 131mph ace.

This victory marks Alcaraz’s sixth Grand Slam title, making him the second-youngest man, behind Bjorn Borg, to reach that milestone. The win also ensures an even split of the four major titles in 2025 between Alcaraz and Sinner, who claimed the Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier in the year. Alcaraz has also reclaimed the world number one ranking from Sinner, who held it for 65 weeks.

Reflecting on the match, Alcaraz highlighted the significance of competing against Sinner, saying, “I see you more than my family. It's great to share the court with you.” Meanwhile, Sinner acknowledged his own shortcomings in the final, admitting, “I tried my best today – I couldn't do more.” Their rivalry continues to captivate the tennis world, offering fans a mix of high-level performance and compelling personal competition.
