Alcaraz Battles Past Nardi to Reach Qatar Open Quarterfinals

Posted : 20 February 2025

Carlos Alcaraz overcame a determined challenge from Italian qualifier Luca Nardi to secure a spot in the Qatar Open quarterfinals. The Spanish top seed appeared to be in full control after storming to a one-set lead and going 4-1 up in the second, but Nardi staged an impressive comeback, winning five consecutive games to force a decider.

However, Alcaraz regained his composure in the final set, breaking Nardi in the fourth game to claim a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory. Reflecting on the match, Alcaraz praised Nardi’s mid-match surge and admitted to briefly struggling with his energy levels but was pleased with his ability to reset and dominate the final set.

Alcaraz, a four-time Grand Slam champion making his debut in Doha, will face Jiri Lehecka in the quarterfinals after the Czech player swiftly dispatched Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 6-2. Elsewhere, second seed Alex de Minaur continued his strong form with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Botic van de Zandschulp.

The Australian, who recently achieved his 200th tour-level hard-court victory, exhibited his trademark speed and resilience, saving all four break points he faced. This marks the third consecutive tournament in which De Minaur has reached the quarterfinals, following a last-eight finish at the Australian Open and a runner-up performance in Rotterdam, where he lost to Alcaraz in three sets.

Meanwhile, third seed Andrey Rublev advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nuno Borges, setting up a clash with De Minaur. Rublev, who triumphed in Doha in 2020, has been in strong form, making the semifinals in Montpellier and the quarterfinals in Rotterdam.

Defending champion Daniil Medvedev delivered a commanding performance, defeating Zizou Bergs 6-2, 6-1, while Britain's Jack Draper secured a straight-sets victory over Christopher O’Connell. Felix Auger-Aliassime progressed via walkover after Hamad Medjedovic withdrew due to a leg injury sustained in his win over Stefanos Tsitsipas.
