Carlos Alcaraz’s run at the Qatar Open came to an end in the quarterfinals as he suffered a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 defeat to Jiri Lehecka. The top-seeded Spaniard had won seven consecutive matches, including his title run in Rotterdam, but was unable to overcome the confident Czech.
Alcaraz briefly gained control in the deciding set with a break, but Lehecka responded by winning the final four games to claim victory. The 23-year-old Czech, who began the season with a title in Brisbane, expressed his joy at the achievement, emphasizing his belief in his game and determination to compete at the highest level.
Lehecka’s triumph secured him a place in the semifinals for the second time in Doha, where he will face either British eighth seed Jack Draper or Italy’s Matteo Berrettini. Berrettini, a former Wimbledon finalist, caused a major upset earlier in the tournament by eliminating world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the second round.
Meanwhile, Andrey Rublev battled past second seed Alex de Minaur in a tense 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (10/8) quarterfinal clash. The 27-year-old Russian, who won the Qatar Open in 2020, saw a 5-2 lead in the final set slip away as De Minaur forced a tiebreak. Despite facing a match point himself, Rublev ultimately converted his eighth match point to secure victory.
Reflecting on the intense contest, Rublev acknowledged the challenge of closing out the match, especially after De Minaur produced remarkable shots at crucial moments. This marked Rublev’s first win over a top-10 player since August last year and set up a semifinal encounter with Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The Canadian advanced after Daniil Medvedev retired while trailing 6-3 in their quarterfinal. With the tournament’s top two seeds eliminated, the race for the Qatar Open title remains wide open heading into the final stages.
