Adewale Issa Foundation Junior Tennis Championship: Atilola, Edwards Claim Gold

Posted : 31 August 2025

The sixth Alhaji Adewale Issa Foundation Junior Tennis Championship ended in Lagos with Mofifuoluwa Atilola and David Edwards securing gold medals in their respective categories.

At the National Stadium, Lagos, Atilola, 16, delivered a commanding performance to defeat Precious Ohimai 6-1, 6-1 in the U-16 girls’ final, confirming her reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest junior tennis prospects.

“I’m thrilled to have won the tournament. After losing in the U-14 category last year, I was determined to come back stronger. I’m glad I achieved that, and it gives me motivation to try for back-to-back wins next year,” Atilola said after her triumph.

Despite her loss, Ohimai’s impressive run earned her the silver medal, further cementing her status as a rising star.

In the U-16 boys’ final, David Edwards, a former Nigerian No. 1 junior now based in the United States, defeated Marvelous Bolarinwa 6-4, 3-0 after Bolarinwa retired due to exhaustion from intense rallies.

“I’m happy to come out on top, although I regret that Marvelous had to retire. This win boosts my confidence going forward,” Edwards stated.

Other winners included:

  • U-12 Boys’ Final: Kingsley Godwin def. Emmanuel Ogungbe 4-6, 6-3, 14-12
  • U-12 Girls’ Final: Mabubat Razaki def. Grace Oritigbemi 6-2, 6-2
  • U-14 Girls’ Final: Success Godwin def. Tiffany Oshi 6-0, 6-3
  • U-14 Boys’ Final: Alex Barnabas def. opponent 6-3, 7-6 (5)

Tournament coordinator Sikirat Adigun-Issa, eldest daughter of the late Adewale Issa, praised the players’ commitment and emphasized the event’s importance for grassroots tennis development.

“I am delighted to see such talent and dedication. Many past participants have gone on to represent Nigeria internationally. Some of these young stars will undoubtedly achieve remarkable things for the country,” she said.

The championship continues to serve as a platform for discovering and nurturing Nigeria’s next generation of tennis champions, raising the standard of junior tennis across the nation.
