Adegoke Muiz of Lagos has been crowned champion of the inaugural Governor Douye Diri Top-16 National Table Tennis Championship, held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, following two days of thrilling table tennis action.
Adegoke Muiz defeated favorite Matthew Kuti 4-0 to claim the top prize, winning the sets 11-8, 11-5, 11-6, and 11-5 in what was described as a “battle of Lagos.” Samuel Boboye of Bayelsa and Abdulfatai Abdulbasit finished in third place.
In the women’s category, Ojomu Ajoke of Jenz Ice Cream Club, Abuja, triumphed over Hope Udoaka of Bayelsa 4-2 to win the championship. Ajoke secured victory with scores of 12-10, 3-11, 8-11, 11-5, and 3-11, asserting her dominance in the competition.
Declaring the tournament closed, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, represented by Commissioner for Sports Development Daniel Igali, praised Mr. Ama-ebi Stow for his contributions to the development of table tennis in the state. Governor Diri highlighted Stow’s efforts as key to Bayelsa’s impressive performance at the last National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The state-of-the-art Fortress facility has also revitalized table tennis in Bayelsa.
Governor Diri expressed delight that the Top-16 championship was hosted in the South-South region for the first time and announced that the tournament would become an annual event, bringing top table tennis talent to Bayelsa.
Nigeria Table Tennis Federation President Adesoji Tayo noted that Bayelsa has closed the gap in table tennis with states like Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo, becoming a strong contender in the sport nationally. The Speaker of the Bayelsa House of Assembly, Hon. Abraham Ingobere, represented by Committee on Sports Chairman Barr Tare Porri, commended Ama-ebi Stow for engaging the state’s youth through table tennis.
Earlier, Apostle Zilly Aggrey, Patron of the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association and Founder of Royal House of Grace International, expressed satisfaction with the growth of table tennis in Nigeria and confidence that Bayelsa-born players would soon compete effectively on the world stage. Ama-ebi Ebikpolade Stow, Chairman of the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association and Technical Adviser to the Governor on Sports, suggested that Nigeria is ready for a national table tennis league to keep players in top condition.
