The 2nd Senator Abiru Mixed Team Table Tennis Championships is set for an electrifying finale on Saturday, as the best teams from Lagos, Edo, and Ondo prepare to compete for the ultimate prize at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
The championship, which began on Thursday, has drawn participation from Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, featuring 150 players in what is recognized as Africa’s first mixed team table tennis event. Over the past two days, the tournament has delivered thrilling rallies, intense competition, and high-quality table tennis action.
Dignitaries including Senator Tokunbo Abiru, the tournament’s sponsor, and ITTF Africa President Wahid Enitan Oshodi, are expected to grace the grand finale, which promises to showcase the best of African talent.
With the defending champions absent, the field has opened up, resulting in a much more competitive atmosphere. Fourteen teams were eliminated on the opening day after failing to progress from their groups, following 42 matches that set the tone for the knockout rounds.
Teams from Lagos, Edo, and Ondo have particularly impressed with dominant performances, while visiting teams from Togo and Benin have also made a strong impact, winning several close contests to reach the latter stages.
Competition Manager, Segun Peters, praised the high standard of play, noting that this year’s edition has seen “remarkable improvement and multiple five-set thrillers.”
He also commended the younger players stepping up in the absence of last year’s champions and applauded the impressive displays from international participants.
“We’ve seen incredible growth and maturity among the teams. The final will be a fierce and exciting contest, and we look forward to crowning new champions this weekend,” Peters said.
As the stage is set for the grand finale, fans can expect a showcase of skill, determination, and teamwork as the tournament concludes in spectacular fashion.
