Posted : 29 August 2025

The 6th Alhaji Adewale Issa Foundation Junior Tennis Championship entered its third day today, delivering thrilling contests in the U-12 and U-16 categories. Boys and girls across these age groups displayed remarkable confidence and determination, comfortably overcoming their opponents in tightly contested matches.

The tournament, which began on August 25, features over 200 participants competing for honors at the National Stadium in Lagos. Players aged 12 to 16 expressed delight at taking part, describing the championship as a strong platform for nurturing grassroots tennis talent. Many participants said they were excited and eager to enjoy one of the most memorable experiences of their young sporting careers.

The annual event provides young players the opportunity to showcase their skills while learning new techniques and strategies of the game. Despite concerns over the decline of tennis in Nigeria, with limited regular competitions, fans and stakeholders continue to support and keep the sport alive.

Tournament Director Bitus Danjuma emphasized that the championship aims to develop young talent into future stars of Nigerian tennis. The event is held in honor of the late Alhaji Adewale Issa, a respected coach who trained many successful Nigerian players. His son, Nurudeen Adewale Issa, based in the U.S., sponsors the tournament to continue his father’s legacy of advancing tennis in Nigeria.

On the third day, preliminary matches produced impressive results. In the U-14 girls’ category, Adejumobi O. defeated Archeabong T. 4-0, 4-0, while Osho T. overcame Yusuf F. by the same score. Alaero Benjamin also progressed with a 4-0, 4-0 victory over Olaedo Irono.

In the U-14 boys’ singles, Lateef Balogun thrashed Mucheal Sebiomo 4-0, 4-0, while Isreal Daniel beat Otube Acanimo 4-1, 4-1. Ramadan Salu edged George Igbinova 5-3, 5-3 in a closely contested match to advance to the next round.

The championship continues to provide a critical platform for young tennis players to grow, compete, and gain exposure, contributing to the future of Nigerian tennis.
