Top seed David Ekpeyong of Bayelsa State has booked a place in the second round of the men’s singles tennis event at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with a commanding 4-0, 4-0 win over Morakinyo Ridwan Adewale of Oyo State in under 30 minutes.
He is now set to face Rubi Toba of Taraba State next, who earlier defeated Benjamin Jeremiah of Kaduna 5-3, 4-0.
“It was a good match. I’m happy to be back on court. My opponent was solid, but I was better today. I believe I’ll get sharper as the tournament progresses,” Ekpeyong said after the match.
FCT’s Danjuma Lucky also advanced with a 4-0, 4-0 win over Henry Nwosu of Imo State. He will now take on Ondo’s Henry Aina, who knocked out Ekiti’s Abamu Mathew.

Abua Candice (Rivers) beat Abdul Mohammed (Nasarawa) 4-2, 4-2; she will next face Mohammed Amir (IJA), who overcame Akwaowo Akwa (Akwa Ibom) 4-2, 4-1.
Olabode Lawal (Lagos) edged past Ehigiamusoe Endurance (Edo) 5-4(5), 4-2 to set up a clash with Abubakar Yusuf (FCT).
In the women’s draw, Barakat Quadri of Delta State delivered a flawless performance, thrashing Iornumun Mary (Benue) 4-0, 4-0 to book a second-round showdown with Rebecca Ekpeyong (Bayelsa).
Other key results in the women’s singles:
Rivers’ Maxwell Timipre defeated Alice Paul (Ondo).
Omotayo Blessing (Edo) overpowered Ganiyu Fatima (Oyo) 4-1, 4-1 and will face Ekiti’s Adeusi Jesutoyosi, who beat Yakubu Oiza (Ogun) 4-2, 4-2.
Moses Favour (Kaduna) also advanced and will face Udofa Mary in the next round.
