The President of the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF), Wahid Oshodi, has expressed optimism ahead of the 2025 ITTF-Africa Championships, applauding the exceptional talent and form displayed by competing players across the continent.
Oshodi commended the Tunisian Table Tennis Federation for stepping in to host the tournament after Rwanda’s late withdrawal, noting their professionalism and long-standing dedication to developing the sport. The championship is scheduled to take place in Tunis from October 12 to 19.
The ATTF president highlighted the strong representation of emerging young players at this year’s edition, emphasizing that their participation reflects the continent’s growing depth in table tennis. He also pointed out that the tournament will serve as a qualifier for the 2026 ITTF World Team Championships in London.
“This year’s championship will be fiercely contested, given the excellent form of our athletes and the rise of young, talented players,” Oshodi said. “Several junior players who competed at youth tournaments in Lagos have now earned spots on their national teams for Tunis.”
According to him, the inclusion of these youngsters demonstrates the progress made in nurturing homegrown talent and signals the potential for surprise performances as they face more experienced opponents. “We must also acknowledge the value of experience from our established players, which will make the competition even more exciting,” he added.
Oshodi described Tunisia as a reliable and experienced host nation, capable of organizing world-class events with an atmosphere that rivals international championships. He emphasized that the team event will be the main highlight of the competition, as it doubles as a qualifier for the 2026 World Team Championships in London — a milestone edition marking the sport’s centenary.
“The 2026 championship will be a historic celebration, returning to London where both the ITTF and the first World Championships were founded in 1926,” Oshodi noted.
This year’s tournament will feature Africa’s best players competing across seven categories, including men’s and women’s singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and team events. The Rades Multisports Hall in Tunis will host eight days of high-level action, showcasing the continent’s finest talents and growing global competitiveness.
