The three-day event, which runs from Thursday, October 30 to Saturday, November 1, was announced by Senator Tokunbo Abiru during a media briefing in Lagos. The lawmaker emphasized that the championship aims to promote gender balance, inclusivity, and teamwork in sports.
Abiru, who also serves as the founder of the SAIL Empowerment Foundation, reaffirmed his dedication to empowering Nigerian youth through platforms that foster skill development and talent discovery.
“This championship reflects our commitment to building opportunities for young Nigerians to thrive through innovation, discipline, and teamwork,” Abiru stated.
He explained that the initiative aligns with the goals of the SAIL Innovation Lab, the foundation’s flagship programme designed to equip young people with skills in technology, entrepreneurship, and creative industries.
The President of the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF), Wahid Oshodi, commended the Abiru Empowerment Foundation for its sustained support of grassroots sports. He highlighted the event’s role in developing a competitive mixed team structure that could represent Nigeria in future international tournaments.
“Although Nigeria did not qualify for the current global edition in China, this kind of initiative helps us prepare better for upcoming competitions,” Oshodi said.
He added that the programme would significantly strengthen Nigeria’s table tennis ecosystem and enhance the nation’s competitiveness on the global stage.
With teams from Togo and Benin Republic joining top Nigerian clubs, the 2025 championship promises an exciting display of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship in the heart of Lagos.
