Zhao Xintong delivered a dominant performance against Ronnie O'Sullivan in the World Championship semi-final, taking a commanding 12-4 lead. After the first session ended 4-4, Zhao returned on Friday morning with a flawless display, winning all eight frames and becoming only the fourth player to achieve a whitewash session against O'Sullivan at the Crucible.
O'Sullivan, who has been open about his struggles with his cue since it broke earlier in the year, made equipment adjustments before the session, but they did little to stop Zhao’s relentless play.
Despite O'Sullivan’s efforts to regain form, he faltered with several missed shots, which Zhao capitalized on clinically. The Chinese amateur, a former UK Championship winner, looked composed and focused, notching up impressive breaks of 112 and 115 along with five additional half-century visits.
His display thrilled the Crucible audience, earning him a standing ovation and reinforcing his potential to become the first Chinese player to win the world title in Sheffield.
Their match will continue on Friday evening, with Zhao just five frames away from securing a place in the final. Meanwhile, world number one Judd Trump holds a narrow 5-3 lead over Mark Williams in the other semi-final, which resumes in the afternoon session.
