In a display of resilience and talent, Yusuf defeated Joshua Daniel 11-5, 11-8, 11-3 (3-0) in the U-19 boys’ final, before overcoming second seed Tarus Sulaimon 11-8, 11-4, 6-11, 11-6 (3-1) in another final on the same day. His back-to-back victories made him the standout player of the tournament.
Despite the demanding schedule, Yusuf showed no signs of fatigue. Each point he won drew loud applause from an enthusiastic crowd that passionately supported him throughout.
Speaking after his wins, Yusuf said:
“I lost in a similar situation two years ago, and I was determined not to let that happen again. I want to thank the sponsors, my coach, and the fans who stood by me. I’m delighted with the victory and now look forward to more competitions, both locally and internationally.”
In the U-19 girls’ final, Aishat Abdulkareem outlasted Zainob Ishola in a tightly contested match. Abdulkareem claimed the first set 11-5, edged a thrilling second set 15-13, and sealed victory in the third set 11-7 for a straight-set (3-0) win.
Meanwhile, in the women’s senior final, tournament favourite Rofiat Abdulazeez delivered a commanding performance to defeat Faidat Soliu 11-9, 11-3, 11-3 (3-0). She dominated every match in the tournament without dropping a set.
“It’s a great competition, and I’m really happy with my performance. I’m looking forward to more events, especially at the international level,” Abdulazeez said.
President of the Nigeria Squash Federation, Boye Oyerinde, praised the players and organizers for a successful event, highlighting the emergence of new talent:
“Yusuf and other young players were outstanding. Nigeria’s squash future looks very promising. I commend the Lagos State Squash Association and Prime Atlantic for their efforts. Hosting events like this helps shape our athletes for international success.”
Tomi Falase, Chairman of the Lagos State Squash Association, said the event was a testament to the success of their grassroots development programme:
“We’re proud of our achievements this year. We’re planning more age-grade competitions—U-16 and U-13—to build confidence among junior players. Our inclusive approach brought players from Rivers, Abuja, Kwara, and Ogun.”
The Prime Atlantic Squash Championship ran from June 9 to 14 and featured top junior and senior talents from across Nigeria, solidifying its reputation as a key platform for squash development in the country.
