Yu Zidi Wins Second Asian Games Gold With Record-Breaking 200m IM Performance

Posted : 22 September 2026

Thirteen-year-old Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi continued her remarkable run at the 2026 Asian Games by claiming gold in the women’s 200m individual medley and setting another Games record.

Yu produced a stunning time of 2:06.10 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre on September 21, finishing 0.40 seconds behind Canadian Summer McIntosh’s world record of 2:05.70. Her performance also surpassed the previous Asian record of 2:06.82 held by compatriot Yu Yiting. (

The victory gave Yu her second gold medal of the Asian Games in as many days. She had opened her campaign by winning the 200m butterfly in a Games-record time of 2:05.08.

“I’m very excited, very happy. It’s an achievement that shows the hard work of our team,” Yu said after her latest victory. She also revealed that she was even happier with her second gold medal than her first.

Yu’s latest performance ranks among the fastest ever recorded in the women’s 200m individual medley. She moved ahead of Hungarian Olympic champion Katinka Hosszú’s previous mark of 2:06.12 to become the second-fastest swimmer in history over the distance.

The teenager had already made history at last year’s World Championships in Singapore. At just 12 years old, she became the youngest swimmer to win a World Championships medal after helping China secure bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Yu now has another opportunity to add to her medal haul when she competes in the women’s 400m individual medley at the Asian Games.
