Yu Zidi Completes Asian Games Gold Hat-Trick With Record-Breaking 400m IM Win

China’s 13-year-old swimming sensation Yu Zidi completed a remarkable hat-trick of gold medals at the 2026 Asian Games after winning the women’s 400m individual medley in record time.

Yu controlled the race from the opening stages and touched the wall in 4:28.56, breaking the Asian Games record previously set by compatriot Ye Shiwen in 2014 by almost 4.5 seconds. Her victory completed a clean sweep of the three individual events she entered in Nagoya.

The teenager had already won the 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley, setting Games records in both events. In the 400m IM, she finished 3.95 seconds ahead of fellow Chinese swimmer Ke Wenxi, while Japan’s Mio Narita took bronze.

Yu’s 4:28.56 was also among the fastest performances in the world this year, further highlighting the significance of her Asian Games campaign. Her results have also intensified attention on her potential at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Meanwhile, North Korean weightlifter Ri Song Gum produced another record-setting performance in the women’s 49kg category, winning her third consecutive Asian Games gold medal. She lifted 94kg in the snatch and 121kg in the clean and jerk before finishing with a 215kg total.

All three of Ri’s marks were world records under the International Weightlifting Federation’s newly established weight-class standards. Her performance also secured North Korea’s first gold medal of the 2026 Asian Games.

India’s Mirabai Chanu claimed silver with a total of 198kg, while Indonesia’s Luluk Diana Tri Wijayana took bronze with 191kg. Ri’s victory made her the first woman to win three Asian Games weightlifting titles.
