Scrabble players across Nigeria will converge on Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, this weekend for the fifth edition of the Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship.
The tournament, scheduled for August 2–3, will take place at the Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa.
Chairman of the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association (BYSA), Mr. Daniel Alabrah, stated in a press release that the local organising committee is fully prepared to host top scrabblers from across the country.
Alabrah noted that the annual championship consistently attracts the best players from both the Nigerian and African scrabble circuits, including world and African champions.
He revealed that no fewer than 200 participants will feature in this year’s edition, affirming the Governor Diri Classic as the biggest event on the Nigerian Scrabble Federation (NSF) calendar.
“Every year since 2021, the Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship has grown bigger and better. This year, the total prize money has been raised again to over ₦10 million, with a star prize of ₦1 million for the winner of the Masters category.
“Exciting cash prizes are also lined up for winners in the Intermediate, Veterans, Opens, and Students categories, as well as for the best female players,” the BYSA chairman added.
