YellowGreens show resolve ahead of Rwanda test

Posted : 13 June 2026

Nigeria’s Female YellowGreens have reinforced their determination at the ongoing Kwibuka Women’s T20I Tournament in Kigali, bouncing back from an opening defeat to Brazil with an impressive seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe Women High Performance.

The response underlined the team’s resilience and ability to regroup quickly, keeping their campaign firmly on track as the tournament enters a decisive phase.

Nigeria’s first outing ended in disappointment despite a respectable batting performance against Brazil. After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the YellowGreens posted 111 for six in their allotted 20 overs.

Shola Adekunle led the scoring with 38 runs off 44 deliveries, while Salome Sunday added 25 and Esther Sandy contributed an unbeaten 15.

Brazil’s bowlers, led by Maria Eduarda McGahey Ribeiro with three wickets, restricted Nigeria from accelerating in the latter stages of the innings.

In reply, Brazil chased down the target with relative comfort, reaching 112 for three with 10 balls to spare. Lindsay Vilas Boas scored 35, while Laura Agatha added 26 to guide her side home.

Christabel Chukwuonye, Adekunle and captain Favour Eseigbe picked up one wicket each, but Nigeria were unable to consistently contain the Brazilian batters.

The defeat, however, sparked an immediate reaction from the YellowGreens, who produced a far more commanding display against Zimbabwe.

Asked to field first, Nigeria’s bowlers dominated proceedings, dismissing Zimbabwe for 107 in 19 overs.

Captain Eseigbe delivered a standout performance, claiming three wickets for 17 runs, while Lilian Ude, Chukwuonye and Racheal Samson contributed two wickets apiece in a disciplined team effort.

The display highlighted the strength and depth of Nigeria’s bowling attack, which maintained pressure throughout the innings.

In pursuit of 108, the YellowGreens remained composed. Salome Sunday anchored the chase with an unbeaten 34, while Esther Sandy added a valuable 25 to keep Nigeria firmly in control.

The match was sealed in emphatic fashion by Oseyende Omonkhobhio, whose unbeaten 14 runs from just four balls, including two towering sixes, ensured a comfortable victory with seven wickets to spare.

Beyond the result, the performance demonstrated Nigeria’s ability to recover from setbacks and execute plans under pressure, a quality that could prove crucial as the tournament progresses.

The win has injected fresh momentum into the squad ahead of a highly anticipated clash against hosts Rwanda.

With Rwanda expected to provide a tougher challenge, another positive result would significantly strengthen Nigeria’s position and further enhance their prospects of competing for honours in Kigali.

This bounce-back performance highlights the growing maturity and adaptability of the Female YellowGreens on the continental stage. By combining a disciplined bowling performance with a clinical run chase, the Nigerian side has proven they can handle tournament pressure. Cricket enthusiasts will watch closely to see if this hard-fought momentum carries over into their crucial showdown against the hosts.
