Yankees Manager Aaron Boone Praises Rising Star Ben Rice Despite Tough Subway Series Loss

Posted : 17 May 2026

The New York Yankees fell to a 6-3 defeat against the New York Mets on Saturday night at Citi Field. The loss evened the weekend Subway Series at one game apiece; it also dropped the Yankees to a 28-18 record for the season. Despite the frustrating outcome on the field, the major talking point centered around the glowing praise manager Aaron Boone showered on breakout infielder Ben Rice before the game.

Boone did not hold back when asked about the young hitter's rapid development. The manager confidently stated that Rice is turning into one of the top hitters across the entire major leagues. It was a massive statement from the veteran skipper; however, the rookie's staggering statistical production throughout the opening six weeks of the season firmly backs up the claim.

Rice entered the weekend contest boasting 14 home runs and 30 RBIs alongside a stellar .314 batting average. His incredible .686 slugging percentage and 1.104 OPS led all of Major League Baseball. Furthermore, Rice and superstar Aaron Judge became only the second pair of teammates in franchise history to hit 14 home runs each within the team's first 45 games.

The young slugger has also answered critical questions about his ability to handle left-handed pitching. Last year, southpaws caused major issues for the infielder. This season, his OPS against lefties skyrocketed to 1.092; that number nearly mirrors the immense damage he inflicts on right-handed pitchers.

Rice is successfully filling a massive void in the lineup. The offensive power was desperately needed after star slugger Juan Soto departed the Bronx to join the Mets. Rice even inherited the number 22 jersey previously worn by Soto; he is now providing the essential left-handed thunder to protect Judge in the batting order.

During the game, the Mets built a 5-2 lead capitalising on a wild pitch from Carlos Rodon and a two-run double by Mark Vientos. Former Yankee pitcher Luke Weaver later escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning to secure the victory for the hosts. The Yankees will look to bounce back in the series finale; their long-term outlook remains incredibly bright due to the emergence of Rice.
