Nigeria’s U-18 men’s handball team will depart for Abidjan on Friday ahead of the 22nd Africa Men’s Cadet Handball Championship, with Coach Abdulhakim Yakubu naming a 14-man squad for the continental tournament.
The championship is scheduled for Sept. 15 to 22 in Côte d’Ivoire, where Nigeria will face a demanding Group B campaign against Tunisia, Algeria and Madagascar.
Yakubu’s final selection comprises a blend of young players expected to carry Nigeria’s hopes at the competition.
The squad includes Shaibu Friday Micheal, Chikelu Chidiebere Divine, Micheal Godstime, Mohammad Akibu, Umar Usman, Abdulkadir Huzaifa and Mohammed Shuaibu.
Also selected are Rufai Aliyu, Akunebu Godswill Obieze Uzoma, Sani Abdulrahman, Mohammed Zukiflu, Fashogbon Sulaimon Abayomi, Abaaka Simon and Musa Mohammed.
The coaching crew will be led by Yakubu, assisted by Ayo Joshua.
The early departure is intended to give the players adequate time to settle in Abidjan, acclimatise to the environment and complete their final preparations before the competition begins on Tuesday.
Nigeria’s Group B assignment will provide an immediate test, with Tunisia and Algeria bringing strong continental pedigree, while Madagascar will also be seeking to make an impact.
The Nigerian cadets will therefore need to combine discipline, tactical organisation and consistency if they are to navigate the group successfully and advance in the championship.
