Wyndham Clark produced a strong mid-round push at the Masters, rolling in three consecutive birdies to move within two shots of overnight leaders Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns as play continued under bright conditions at Augusta National.
The 2023 U.S. Open champion showed sharp touch on the greens, highlighted by a long putt on the par-three fourth hole that helped fuel his momentum. Clark’s steady rise keeps him firmly in the hunt for a second major title.
World number one Scottie Scheffler also made a composed start to his second round. Competing in his first event since welcoming his second child, the two-time Masters champion remained in strong position, sitting just a few shots off the lead and looking comfortable in the softer early conditions.
Defending champion Rory McIlroy began his title defence in impressive fashion with a five-under-par 67. After a slightly tense opening, the Northern Irish star settled quickly and produced one of his best starts at Augusta in more than a decade.
Rory McIlroy is aiming to become only the fourth player in history to successfully defend the Masters title, and the first since Tiger Woods achieved the feat in 2002. However, rising afternoon temperatures are expected to make scoring more difficult as conditions firm up.
Elsewhere, Patrick Reed stayed within striking distance after taking advantage of the par fives in his opening round, finishing near the top of the leaderboard alongside McIlroy and Burns.
The LIV Golf group had a tougher outing, with none of the ten players managing to break par. Among them, Bryson DeChambeau opened with a four-over round, while Jon Rahm struggled to a six-over start.
With no rain expected, Augusta National continues to play fast and firm under clear Georgia sunshine, setting up a challenging test as the tournament moves into the weekend.
