Wyndham Clark has issued an apology after drawing criticism for an emotional outburst during the PGA Championship, where he threw his club in frustration. The incident occurred on the 16th tee at Quail Hollow when Clark pushed a drive into a fairway bunker and hurled his club, which struck signage and broke apart, narrowly missing a nearby volunteer.
Following a disappointing round of 3-over 74 and a final tie for 50th place at 4-over par, Clark took to social media on Monday to express regret. In his message, he acknowledged falling short of professional standards and admitted that he allowed his emotions to take over during a challenging moment.
Clark called his actions "uncalled for and completely inappropriate" and emphasized his intention to improve his conduct. He reflected on the importance of playing with integrity and promised to handle future frustrations more constructively. The golfer also appealed for understanding and forgiveness from fans and the golfing community.
The 31-year-old former U.S. Open champion has been struggling in recent tournaments, with no top-25 finishes since early March. Clark has previously opened up about his battles with mental health, grief, and anger following the loss of his mother to breast cancer over a decade ago, highlighting the personal challenges that continue to shape his journey in professional golf.
